Why Aren’t We Talking About These Important Subjects?

On a serious note, these subjects should be topics we should feel comfortable enough, discussing among our friendship circle.

Twelve hours ago I was talking to a friend via facetime on my lunch time, and our conversation turned to how she was feeling mentally and emotional drained, dealing with problems that have reared its head for the last few weeks. She spoke about how she was feeling overwhelmed by the drastic changes around her. She’s accomplished a lot this year, yet she felt like there was something missing. As she opened up to me, It dawned on me that we are lucky, we could openly talk about things that were causing us stress, taboos people are afraid to speak about with their friends. On the brink of meltdown, despite, knowing there was little I could do, she chose to tell me that she was seeking help to calm her mind and deal with the anxiety she’s been feeling.

Then my mind wonder If people were this fortunate enough, to be able to freely express their concerns, stress and Taboos topics with their friends. Personally, I believe friendship is not just about partying, grabbing lunch and frolicking around London, It’s all about helping each other grow emotionally, mentally and physically. Having the patience to understand one another, and just be a listening ear. Our topics range from boys to sexual health clinics, to smears test, GP checks and mental health. Ohh and also Mortgage. I guess, you can say she inspired this post.

Mental health varies from OCD to anxiety, depression, and much more. It’s something a lot of people don’t open up about, because of the stigma about it. It doesn’t have a set rule for diagnosis, one in four people tend to suffer from it. Often, people see their friend’s issue as a temporary situation, without knowing the full details. Having listening ears is imperative when it comes to situations like this. You should also never be afraid to seek help from a professional when you’re falling apart and can no longer keep it together. Even therapist have their therapist.

Do me a favour. Can you ask yourself the last time you went to the GP for check-ups? If you had to think about it, it’s time to book an appointment. The body is the car your soul drives. A worn out car won’t be able to get from point A to B. It’s so important for us to check ourselves on a regular basis to ensure our body is well enough to detect any changes.

According to my doctor, getting an STI/STD test at your GP can affect getting a mortgage in the future. It’s along the lines of being a risk as you can’t take out life insurance. I might be misquoting him, so, I’ll ask him again to be sure. Hence, the reason why he encourages me to visit the sexual health clinics because my results won’t be on my record. Most people don’t experience any symptoms, so they are unaware they are infected. I believe if you can explicitly talk about your sexual escapades, you’re old enough to walk yourself to the nearest clinic.

Eleven months to go before I hit the age of regular smears test. A smear test is a method of detecting abnormal cells on the cervix. The cervix is the entrance to the womb from the vagina – detecting and removing abnormal cervical cells can prevent cancer. Once you’re twenty-five, please don’t forget to book your appointment to get tested!
